2023 AATG MARYLAND/DC METRO CHAPTER HIGH SCHOOL & COLLEGE AWARDS

German Society of Maryland President, Steven Harper, joined Chapter Board Members Mohamed Esa, Will Funk-Heiser, Amy Rill, Marilyn Murphy, Susanne Sutton and Deborah McGee Mifflin to honor German learners across Maryland and Washington, DC at the High School and College levels.

The ceremony was held on May 7, 2023 at UMBC, where Board member Susanne Sutton heads the German program. 

Each High School award winner received a Medal (Gold or Silver), a monetary award from the GSM and a bag of goodies.

Steven Harper congratulates Georgetown German major, Axel Opwis Soares, who along with Mareike Debye and Paulina Leder, both of University of Maryland, College Park, were recipients of the German Society's Merit Award for German Majors. Winners received a certificate and a $1000.00 monetary prize.

Also receiving an award were Emma Gebhard of UMD and Halyna Sokoliouk from Towson University, both German minors. Winners of this award received a certificate and a $500.00 monetary prize.

Each year, students with the highest scores on the National German Exam compete for a Summer Study Trip to Germany sponsored by the AATG and the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst (PAD).  Pictured here are the winners (red) and finalists (blue) from our Chapter.  Chloe Kang (Liberty HS), Rebecca Levi (GLC) and Louisa Mulligan (GLC) will be headed to Germany in June - July!
