Ali Can - Who is he?

Ali Can is a 25 year old German with Kurdish-Turkish roots. His family fled Turkey when he was a child and after many years of refugee status, opened up a Döner-Laden. In the aftermath of the rise of Pegida, the AfD and the controversies surrounding Mesut Özil and the National Soccer team, Ali Can became known for his two initiatives to counteract racism and discrimination in Germany. He founded a so-called 'Hotline für besorgte Bürger', whereby citizens were able to air their fears and stereotypes about "foreigners" in dialogue. This later became a book of the same name. 

More recently, he began the hashtag #metwo to open up a space for Germans living with immigrant backgrounds to speak about discrimination in their daily lives. 

His visit to the US will engage audiences in the fundamental questions about German identity in the year 2019.

On Tuesday, November 19, he will appear at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and engage in a moderated talk with DAAD Visiting Professor of History, Victoria Harms.
